Welcome, my name is Javier Gramajo I’m going to introduce, this conference: Human Computation and Web 3.0: The Mayan legacy, after the introduction Luis Von Ahn will talk about Human Computation and Finally I will talk about Web 3.0

First of all Luis Von Ahn and myself born at Guatemala a small country, with 14 million people with a mixture of locals and European mostly, Guatemala has 42,042 sq mi (108,000 squared kilometers), 25 Mayan Languages, plus Spanish the official language, English and Garifuna a mixture of African Language/French/English/Spanish. Total languages 27.

Guatemala is the place where the Mayans created the longest lasting civilization of the New World, their fantastic culture has more than 3000 years old at Guatemala and they get extended to the South o Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, more than 625 miles (1000 km) all this region is called Mesoamerica by the archaeologists.

The people of Mayan society built vast cities, ornate temples, and towering pyramids. Reached their highest state of development during the Classic period around 900 A.D., the population numbered 500 people per square mile in rural areas, and more than 2,000 people per square mile in the cities — comparable to modern as Los Angeles County.

The Mayan culture have been the pioneers in the use of the Zero, this means a lot, without the zero we cannot have the current technology we use daily.

The Mayan culture employed a 365-day solar calendar, like the Western calendar, the days in a month are identified by numbers, but the first day of the month is zero instead of one as in the Western calendar.

The current Mayan called Guatemalans people has 10 universities, 9 of them are private and one national university.

About semantic and the Mayan Culture:

Semantic used by the Mayan means meaning, of the objects, of the concepts, meaning of the universe using numbers, Glyphs, etc.

Well, As I said I from Guatemala a great country that have a lot to show to the world, I came back (from Spain and Slovenia, were I spend 8 years of my life doing research) to Guatemala in 2005, to be with my wife and my son (at that time my son was going to born). Then, I started teaching Artificial Intelligence (AI), and many people told me AI in Guatemala for what? And, I said, why not? Now with my students we already develop some prototypes that combine Ontologies and Databases, this prototypes works as a Knowledge Management Systems applied to several sectors such as: Tourism, Healt, R&D, Human Development, Education, etc.

As a committed professor, I work with my students at my home 6 hours at day, Guatemala still does not have the conditions to develop research, but deep inside of me I know that this is my passion and I want to spend my life doing that, and that´s why I have created a NGO, called fundaTICs, and the main aims of fundaTICs are: Promote Relations between Academy-industry-State, to share knowledge of our work using videos, podcasts, articles and radio program, also we have created a blog, and a directory of central American junior and senior researchers that works all around the world

What is the main contribution of this research work in terms of solving a problem and develop a useful tool related to the exploitation of The Web?

Five years ago we started to work with ontologies so we created a general prototype that uses Ontologies and data bases, the Ontology is mapped to the data base using RAP, this .

What new algorithms need to be defined that require us to use different methodologies from several research areas as Ontologies and Web mining in order to create a general purpose tool that retrieves and organizes information in a useful way to both humans and computers

Intelligent Searches that means: Exact results, related and recommend results based on the

structure of semantics of the Ontology (Subject, Predicate and Object)

Use of Ontologies to describe a Domain, this Ontology can be used to share information produced by people: Collective Learning..

  • Ontologies provide a shared and common understanding of a domain that can be communicated between people and heterogeneous application systems.
  • As [Dieter Fensel 2001] described: “Ontologies provide a shared and common understanding of a domain that can be communicated between several applications and people”.
  • The use of Ontologies to describe the knowledge of a particular domain means the use of Domain Ontologies.

How can you develop an automated process that assists users to contextualize-them using mobile devices?

Searching engines presents results to the users

who try to find information but as many times occurs the user do not really now the exact information that try to find, using the similar process

that human brain uses: A relation of concepts or ideas (i.e

mental map).

How can you make a contribution with the presented methodologies applying them in an intermediate step between the second generation (Web 2.0) of the web and The Semantic Web (Web 3.0)?

We propose a research project

that works on similar way of human brain, the prototypes combine Semantic searches and Semantic

Databases which are the base of Web 3.0.

  • The main contribution of this research work is to solve a problem and develop a useful tool related to the exploitation of The Web.

How can you replicate the Web 3.0 phenomenon that is happening in Guatemala, locally in your own area, school, startup, city, etc?

Creating Knowledge-based Systems (KBS’s) applied to the domain that are important to the people, Tourism, Healt, Research and Development, Education and TICs, etc. this systems allow to the people to create platforms for collective learning approaching the Open Data concept, this KBS’s will be used to predict or improve the human making decision.

Intellectual Capital

Determine which is the Intellectual Capital of the region to identify the skills and abilities of organizations of any kind and people working in the applied field.

Organization

Enable the various organizations and people know to each other and achieve their goals through joint cooperation, avoiding duplication of efforts.

Indicators

Generate indicators to determine capabilities, weaknesses and opportunities related to all the resources associated to the selected domain.

Mobile Technologies:

Once developed the final prototype can be developed interfaces to be used on mobile devices in order to develop the next generation called OntoContextualización.
